What You Can Do To Help Prevent Identity Theft And Fraud
Identity theft and fraud are different, but they are both parts of the same phenomenon. It is a phenomenon which is becoming ever more of a problem in the highly developed Western banking system. The use of computers to store huge amounts of data does bring with it an increased risk of that data being compromised. There is much which an individual can do to lessen the chances of falling victim to identity theft and fraud, but obviously there is no way to control what happens once your data is on someone else's database.
It is worth noting the difference between identity theft and fraud. In reality, it is not even possible to steal an identity, but it is possible to steal information relating to an identity, which can then be used for illegal purposes. Fraud is the action committed when the criminal actually uses the misappropriated information to pretend to be the owner of the data. It is important to make the distinction, as it allows the problem to be tackled at two different levels.
Tackling the problem at the level of identity theft involves safeguarding your data to the optimum degree. Make sure that any PIN numbers and passwords are kept safe. If you must write these down, make sure you write them down in code, and make sure that this code is something which no-one else will be able to decipher. Especially, do not make the obvious mistake of carrying your pin number around with your cards. Every bank and credit card company warns against this, but there are still large numbers of people who do it.
Once the information relating to an identity has been stolen, it is then a matter of the security which is in place to protect against identity fraud. Identity theft monitoring is offered by the major credit reference agencies. This allows constant monitoring of suspected websites where stolen information is stored and traded. It is also possible, once an identity theft has been reported, to instigate a system which monitors credit files looking for suspect activity. If the criminal tries to take out loans, the system will be alerted to this.
Although this identity theft monitoring can be effective, it is charged against the consumer. There is obviously a limit to the amount of money the average person in the street can afford to pay to reach this level of protection. For the vast majority of people, the expense involved in setting up a system like this will vastly outweigh any potential benefit. If you are in a higher income bracket, or if you have a multitude of bank or credit card accounts, your situation may be different. It is up to each individual to weigh the risks for themselves, and to make the appropriate choice. There is much which can be done for free, in combating identity theft and fraud.
